Language is the second component of communication. Language is the words we use and how we use them to share ideas and get what we want. Our language skills are separated into receptive language and expressive language.
Receptive language is how we understand language. This includes our understanding of spoken words as well as non-verbal communication (writing and gestures).
Expressive Language is the ability to express our wants and needs. There are many ways that people use expressive language including spoken words, gestures (such as waving or pointing), writing (including text messages), and body language (such as eye contact, smiling).
Difficulties, delays, and disorders of language can be receptive or expressive. Oftentimes, an individual will have difficulty with both receptive and expressive language skills. If you are concerned that your child is not understanding or expressing their needs and wants, contact Roswell Speech Therapy for a free 20-minute consultation.
